"I still remember the day I made one of the most important decisions of my life—a choice between what I truly longed for and what others expected of me. My body was bursting with emotions, a mix of fear and joy, until the moment I took the first step that led me to where I am now. My name is Paola García Mejía, and I am a student of Engineering in Sustainable Agriculture.

As an out- of-state student living in Oaxaca, most of my funds go toward basic necessities such as rent, gas, water, food supplies, and other expenses like transportation from Guanajuato to Oaxaca, local transportation, school- related costs, and out-of-pocket trips.

Goals:

  • Potential international academic exchange
  • Upcoming class trip abroad
  • Language courses
  • Workshops related to agronomy and public speaking

"Throughout my academic life, I’ve received recognition for participating in science fairs, maintaining high grades, attending conferences, and engaging in workshops and other activities. When I chose to study agronomy, I followed my dreams and love for the land. Everything changed, and now I hope to grow and build a professional life where I can support communities and farmers by advising on or assisting with projects. I also plan to pursue research to contribute to both the productive and scientific communities."

I identify with dreamers—people who pursue their goals and dare to take the necessary steps to achieve them...I enjoy spending time with anyone I can learn something from, but especially those who have a unique outlook on life and strong values like respect, empathy, and sincerity.

My commitment isn’t just to myself—it’s also to the environment and the current global situation. This means learning everything I can...so I can implement technologies that may not yet be widely used in agriculture in Mexico... I feel a strong responsibility and commitment to the place where I grew up—my family and Dolores Hidalgo—and I aim to apply my skills to support them first. Then, I hope to make a broader impact across the country, especially since UACh is such a noble institution that instills this sense of duty in me, particularly toward protecting nature and sustainable agricultural practices.

Personally, I would love to be involved in flower and ornamental plant production and publish my poetry while continuing to engage in the arts.
